What can I do if something comes loose on my braces?
Here’s a quick rundown of what can come loose and how to address it before coming in for a repair appointment.
- Loose wire: First try wax. Next, try using tweezers to put the wire back in place. Lastly, try to carefully clip the wire behind the last tooth it’s fastened to with baby clippers.
- Loose bracket: Don’t attach a rubber band to a loose bracket. If your bracket is still attached to your wire, leave it. If it comes off completely, save it and bring it to your appointment.
- Loose metal band: Don’t attach a rubber band. Avoid sticky foods and make an effort to keep it in place until your visit.
What if my braces are hurting my mouth?
We’ll show you how to use wax in any spots where your braces are bothering the inside of your gums, lips, or cheeks. You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed to relieve pressure after adjustments.
What happens at an orthodontic emergency appointment?
We offer two special types of appointments when you’re having an issue with your braces. Call us for a “comfort” appointment, where we can clip a wire or adjust a loose bracket so you don’t experience any discomfort while you wait for your repair appointment.
Call us for a “repair” appointment to fix anything that comes loose. Even if you have a regular visit coming up, please call us and let us know about the repair as it cannot be done during a routine appointment; there isn’t enough time for both. But if you call us, we can give you an extended appointment time so both can be done.
