“Abracadabra,” the magician announces. With a wave of her hands and a bit of flourish, something starts to move across that stage.
Even if we don’t know how the trick is done, most people are aware that this is an illusion. The stage magician isn’t a wizard with real magical powers.
In a way, lingual braces are like this in the world of orthodontics. Granted, this “trick” takes a lot longer to finish that a stage magician “levitating” someone … and we aren’t going to put your teeth back where they started.
Our point is that with lingual braces from Leiker Orthodontics, the real “magic” is happening behind the scenes. If you are interested in the most discreet way to change your smile, schedule a consultation at either of our dentist offices in The Woodlands or Conroe, TX. You can call 832-510-6678 or contact us online.
What Are Lingual Braces?
Lingual means relating to or on the side of the tongue. Lingual braces are placed on the back of your teeth or the side that is closest to your tongue.
Because of this, special training is necessary for a dentist to offer lingual braces. Our orthodontist, Dr. Brad Leiker, has completed this training because he wants our patients to have every option available for their orthodontic care.
If you are interested in a truly discreet treatment option, you aren’t going to beat lingual braces.
How Do Lingual Braces Work?
Lingual braces work practically the same as traditional braces. The main difference is where they are attached.
You still have brackets bonded to your teeth. You still have an archwire running between the brackets. Your braces will still need to be adjusted from time to time.
And, most importantly, you can still create a straighter, more attractive smile by the end of your treatment.
Like traditional braces, lingual braces can be used to close gaps between teeth, to create a little more room between crowded teeth, and to get crooked teeth in line. With moderate, steady pressure, you can have the smile you want to see rather than the smile you have today.
The Benefits Of Lingual Braces
If you work in a job that requires a lot of face-to-face interaction with people, you may not feel comfortable wearing traditional braces. On a more personal level, you may feel even more self-conscious with braces on the front of your smile than you do without them.
If you’ve ever had a friend with braces, then you know it’s just something you see. It’s hard not to notice. Knowing this may discourage you from getting traditional braces, especially if you thought that was your only option for making changes to your smile.
With lingual braces, you can receive your orthodontic care without most people realizing you are wearing them on your teeth. This can make going to a job interview, going on a date, or attending a social event more comfortable for you.
Are There Drawbacks To Lingual Braces?
Well, like any orthodontic treatment, you will feel the pressure each time your braces are adjusted.
It also takes time to get used to wearing braces, but having them on the back of your teeth can pose some unique issues. Because of where they are attached, you may notice they affect how you speak initially. With a little time, however, you will sound like yourself again.
And having braces on the back of your smile will make oral hygiene even more important than it already is (and it’s pretty important). You will want to brush up (no pun intended) on what you need to do to keep your lingual braces free of food particles. The last thing you want is tooth decay or gum disease interfering with your orthodontic treatment.
